Summary, etc. | Education formulated Goal number 4 in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) launched by the United Nations (UN) in 2015. The current study uses mixed method to investigate the role of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in achieving the Sustainable Development (SD). Case study analysis is adapted to find out the role of HEIs in the National Sustainable Development Strategies (NSDSs) of three countries: Germany, Japan, and Egypt. Both cases of Leuphana University of Lüneburg (LUL) in Germany and The University of Tokyo (UT) in Japan are analysed as best practices leading universities in Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). In comparison, the case of Cairo University (CU) is presented. Furthermore, the study quantitively uses one-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) to find out the differences in SD competencies between students enrolled in different colleges. Also, the study applies chi-square test to find out the differences between the contribution of colleges in building SD competencies. The research further analyses the formal and informal education roles in building students{u2019} SD competencies using Structural Equation Modelling (SEM). Primary data collected by survey responses of 384 students enrolled in five colleges at CU in addition to semi-structured interviews with three CU officials. The study concludes a group of five categories that identifies the potential role of HEIs to support SD, CU has taken many steps in applying this role, yet a number of actions are required to fill in the gaps to play the ideal role it should play. Moreover, the quantitative results report that some of CU{u2019}s current roles support the students{u2019} SD competencies, while other roles do not provide any support |
