| Summary, etc. | Background: Diabetes mellitus is a group of diverse metabolic disorders in which there are high blood sugar levels over a prolonged period. If left untreated, diabetes can lead to many complications. In Egypt, the prevalence of diabetes is around 15.56% among adults between 20 and 79 years of age. A number of spices and herbs have used for treating diabetes. One of such is cinnamon, which has been demonstrated to potentiate the hypoglycemic effect of insulin and antioxidative effect in diabetic rats.Objective: The aim of this study was to prepare and characterize nanoencapsulated cinnamon oil (NECO) ) (200mg and 400mg/kg) and to determine the possible protective effect against diabetes in streptozotocin (STZ)-treated rats focusing on serum glucose level, lipid profile, liver function tests, renal function tests, insulin, testosterone level, oxidative stress markers and antioxidative effect. Method: Nine groups of male rats were treated for 4 weeks including a control group; normal rats received NECO (200 or 400 mg/kg b.wt.); diabetic rats group (D-rats);a D-rats groups received NECO (200 or 400 mg/kg b.wt); a D-rats group received glibenclamide (0.6 mg/kg); a D-rats group received protamine zinc insulin (0.9 IU/100g) and a D-rats group received insulin plus NECO (200 mg/kg b.wt). Single intra-peritoneal 55mg/kg injection was used to induce diabetes in all rats. Samples of blood and tissues were collected after the end of treatment period for biochemical, gene expression and histological analyses |
