| Summary, etc. | Introduction:Worldwide, hormonal contraceptives are among the most popular reversible contraceptives. Many studies suggest no major differences in carbohydrate metabolism between different hormonal contraceptives in women without diabetes but these effects seemed to be limited. Aim of the study:The study aimed to improve the utilization of different contraceptive methods (monthly injectable combined contraceptives, combined oral contraceptive pills versus IUD) through studying their effects (menstrual, non-menstrual and metabolic) among the users. Subjects and Methods: This is a randomized controlled study included about 124women who attended to family medicine unit in Kom-Ashfeen village in El-Kalyubia governorate, in the context of period from April 2018, till February 2019. The participants were assigned into three groups according to their choice of contraception method as Group A (44women on monthly combined injectable contraceptives), Group B (40 women on combined oral contraceptive pills) and Group C(40 women who used IUD) as control group.Results:There was no significant difference at the baseline when comparing the three groups while there were statistically significant differences among the studied groups regarding HbA1c and insulin level (p-value {u02C2}0.05) after 6 months.There is statistically significant increase in glycosylated hemoglobin leveland significant decrease in serum insulin level in pre-diabetic subjects in groups A andB. Conclusion:hormonal contraceptive methods had adverse effects on carbohydrate metabolism in the form of significant decrease in insulin level and increase in Hb A1C |
