Background: Postoperative nausea, vomiting and retching (PONVR) still the most common and distressing complaints after surgery. Despite of potency of pharmacological management of PONVR, patients still suffer from such problem. Diaphragmatic breathing exercise could be integrated with medications to minimize the possibility of PONVR. Aim: To evaluate the effect of diaphragmatic breathing exercise on selected postoperative complaints (nausea, vomiting and retching) among postoperative orthopedic patients. Design: One group pre-posttest Quasi-experimental design was utilized. Research hypotheses: H1. Postoperative orthopedic patients who were performing the diaphragmatic breathing exercise would have less mean nausea scores than before practicing diaphragmatic breathing. H2. Postoperative orthopedic patients who were performing the diaphragmatic breathing exercise would have less mean retching scores than before practicing diaphragmatic breathing. H3. Postoperative orthopedic patients who were performing the diaphragmatic breathing exercise would have less mean vomiting scores than before practicing diaphragmatic breathing. Setting: The current study was conducted at recovery rooms and orthopedic words at Kaser Al-Ainy hospital, affiliated to Cairo University. Sample: A convenient sample of 100 adult male and female conscious patients undergone orthopedic surgery under general anesthesia were included in the study along five consecutive months. Tools: Two tools were utilized; Demographic and Medical Related Data Form and Index of Nausea, Vomiting, and Retching. Results: The study results revealed that the total mean scores of total nausea, vomiting and retching were decreased with statistically significant difference among postoperative orthopedic patients after performing diaphragmatic breathing exercise |
