He was dubbed the "Poet of the Nile", and sometimes the "Poet of the People", for his political commitment to the poor; born 1871 in in Dayrut, in Egypt; born February 24, 1872, Egypt; died June 21, 1932; one of several Egyptian poets that revived Classical Arabic poetry during the latter half of the 19th century; lived in and received his primary school education in Tanta; then moved to Cairo where he completed his secondary education; after his mother died, Hafez moved back to Tanta and worked alongside the lawyer Muhammad Abu Shadi)
