That is the ambition of the Encyclopedia of life (EOL) project drawing together many of the most distinguished scienctific institutions in the world. Leading scientists explain how this enormous enterprise is designed. The work already accessible online (www.eol.org) builds on the classifications of linnaeus and integrates new scientific insights, and is well on its way to covering the tow million species already indentified by scientists
