Epilepsy as a chronic illness imposes several psychosocial stressors on patients and influences their health - related behaviorsThe disease requires substantial behavioral and psychosocial adjustmentsThe influence of psychosocial stressors exerted by epilepsy on self - efficacy is not well documented , especially among the Egyptian patientsThis study was conducted to identify the psychosocial stressors and self - efficacy among epileptic patientsA sample of convenience of 100 epileptic patients was recruited from the Out - patient clinic in El - Abassia Mental Health Hospital in Cairo and El Manial University Hospital Out - patient Clinic for EpilepsyFour tools were used to accomplish this study including socio - demographic and medical data sheet , Stressors Inventory for Persons with Epilepsy (SIPE) , General Self - efficacy Scale (GSES) , and Epilepsy Self - efficacy Scale (ESES) The investigator collected data through a semi - structured interview with each patient and his / her family member if availableResults revealed that epileptic patients had intermediate psychosocial stressors (75) as well as intermediate self - efficacy (72As indicated by the higher mean scores of self - efficacy questionnaire especially patient's adherence to medication subscale (2399 ± 458) , and lower mean scores of psychosocial stressors especially medications - related stressors subscale (1020 ± 187) In addition , the study revealed that the frequency of attack was the most related element to the level of psychosocial stressors and self - efficacy beliefsAccordingly , the study recommended that , psychiatric nurses should teach patients and their families about epilepsy , emphasizing their need to medication compliance as disseminating the concept of epilepsy to the patient is a vital cognitive part of any effective therapy
