The study examines how Japanese writers dealt with American image in
post-World War II (post-defeat) period in their narrative works. And how the
Japanese writers in that period were different in describing the American
person. As well as how the reactions of Japanese characters towards
American characters vary from disgust and amazement, from fear of them
and ambition to become like them, and many other images that appeared in
post-World War II novels. The problem of the study is the lack of previous
studies on the subject and the lack of some of them to develop a specific and
comprehensive framework of American image, focusing on the novels of
the Japanese third generation writers. the choice of the subject of this
research stems from a keen interest in discovering circumstances of different
societies which appear in novels, they often inform the reader of the life of
societies in general, and of Japanese society in particular. Japanese society as
well was affected by the period of the Second World War and the period
after the defeat of the huge events that hit Japan. Some third-generation
writers are distinguished from others by describing aspects of their lives in a
very detailed way, which helps to study the life of a member of Japanese
society.
The study focuses on analyzing specific works of Yasuoka Shoutarou and
Kojima Nobuo. Both writers were concerned with portraying the effects and
consequences of the defeat on Japanese society. Besides, both writers had a
real participation in world war II. The importance of this study is to define a
comprehensive framework for the image of the American in post-war
Japanese novels, which were not discussed in detail in previous studies, and
it is from the point of view of an Egyptian researcher. The study contributes
to enriching the field of research in Japanese literature. It is based on two
descriptive approaches, one is based on describing and identifying the
problem of the research and collecting data on it. The other is analytical
approach which is based on a detailed analysis of the available data.
