Summary: Social media are interactive technologies and digital channels that facilitate the creation and sharing of information, ideas, interests, and other forms of expression through virtual communities and networks. The emergence of so-called social media tools such as Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter has raised new questions about the democratic participation of citizens, especially young adults. Some observers credit social media with spurring the political participation of young adults by facilitating the exchange and creation of political content online. Others are concerned that the way social media cover news or puts it before the public in a sarcastic manner has a negative impact on the society as a whole. It mainly stresses on the political sphere, the declining of public trust, the political cynicism etc. Media Malaise theory is considered fundamental in studying the negative effect of the media on the public sphere. This study utilized an explanatory cross-sectional design, consisting of quantitative data collected through a questionnaire directed at Egyptian young adults on social media to test how specific social media behaviors like experiencing and interacting with sarcastic political content on social media like Facebook and Instagram might impact their levels of political disaffection. (403) participants filled out the questionnaire. Results indicated a relationship between the exposure of sarcastic political content on social media and the political disaffection of Egyptian young adults mediated by internal political efficacy, external political efficacy, and the demographic characteristics of the respondents. This study’s findings contribute to the body of knowledge relating to the political effects of social media on the young public sphere in Egypt. The significance of these findings and suggestions for further research are discussed.
