With the revival of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s concept of a world literature that succeeds the era of national literature in the 1990s, the discipline of world literature initially emerged as a means of mediation to reduce the gap of structural inequalities between center and periphery. Yet with world literature’s rise came its problematics. This dissertation engages with the challenging concept of world literature and investigates its entanglement with the process of the literary canon formation. Given the significant impact of twentieth-century literary theories and political movements on canon formation, the dissertation examines in depth how French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu’s concept of the field can be reconfigured to accommodate a new interpretation of the concept. The outcome is a tailored model of the field where anthologies, their editors, and the text selections are organized hierarchically as per their capacity as players with enough agency to make an impact on canon formation. To concretize the study, the dissertation studies the structure and content of selected editions of the three main anthologies of world literature circulating and widely used in the U.S. market for academic purposes: The Norton Anthology of World Literature (2012), The Longman Anthology of World Literature (2004), and The Bedford Anthology of World Literature (2004). The dissertation illustrates how the discipline of world literature, as studied through the lens of selected anthologies, remains rife with structural inequalities that further complicate its study.

مع إعادة إحياء مع إحياء مفهوم يوهان فولفجانج فون جوته للأدب العالمي الذي خلف عصر الأدب الوطني في التسعينيات، ظهر مفهوم أدب العالم بالأساس كطريقة للوساطة لتقليل الفجوة بين التفاوتات الهيكلية بين المركز والأطراف. لكن مع انتشار مفهوم أدب العالم جاءت إشكالاته. تناقش هذه الرسالة مفهوم أدب العالم الذي يشكل تحديا وتتناول تشابكه مع عملية تشكيل النصوص المعيارية الأدبية. نظرًا للتأثير الكبير للنظريات الأدبية والحركات السياسية في القرن العشرين، تبحث الرسالة بتعمق كيف يمكن إعادة تشكيل مفهوم "الحقل" لعالِم الاجتماع الفرنسي بيير بورديو لتقديم نموذج جديد للمفهوم. النتيجة هي تقديم نموذج مخصص لمفهوم "الحقل" حيث يتم تنظيم المختارات ومحرريها والنصوص المختارة بشكل هرمي وفقًا لقدراتهم كلاعبين يتمتعون بالقوة الكافية لإحداث تأثير على عملية تشكيل النصوص المعيارية. تدرس الرسالة هيكل ومحتوى ثلاثة طبعات للمختارات الرئيسية لأدب العالم المنتشرة والمستخدمة على نطاق واسع في الولايات المتحدة: مختارات نورتون لأدب العالم (2012)، ومختارات لونجمان في لأدب العالم (2004)، ومختارات بيدفورد لأدب العالم (2004). توضح الرسالة أن مجال أدب العالم، كما يتم دراسته من خلال المختارات المحددة، لا يزال مليئا بالتفاوتات الهيكلية التي تزيد من تعقيد دراسته.
