الإبداع هو القدرة على تجميع الحقائق ورؤية المعلومات بطريقة مختلفة والإتيان بأفكار غير مألوفة، فالطفل مولع بحب الاستطلاع وكشف كل ما يحيط به. كما أنه شخص خيالي يمارس أنشطته الخيالية بدون حدود، وذلك من خلال روح اللعب التي تسيطر على معظم أنشطته. وتعد هذه الصفات جوهر اكتساب المعرفة والتفكير الإبداعي، الذي قد يكون بمجال واحد، وقد يشمل جميع مجالات الحياة. المبدع ليس فقط الناجح في المدرسة أو المخترع، فقد يكون مبدعًا بتأليف القصص أو بالرسم أو بالموسيقا أو بالأشياء التي تتطلب أداءً حركيًا مميزًا ومختلفًا عن الآخرين.إن الحرص على تنمية مهارات التفكير والإبداع لدى الطفل منذ الصغر أمر هام جدًا؛ فالتحديات اليومية هي التي توسع فهمه لهذا العالم بالتعاون مع البيئة الداعمة له و التي تسمح للطفل أن يصبح أكثر ثقة بوجهات نظره وآرائه عن طريق التدريب، والممارسة، والاستكشاف، والتشجيع، واللعب والتفاعل مع البيئة المحيطة.
وبالرغم من أن الأطفال الذاتويين لديهم خلل في علاقاتهم الإجتماعية وطرق تواصلهم مع المجتمع والأشخاص المحيطين بهم ويتمتعون في الوقت نفسه بقدرات عقلية أفضل من الجميع ف بعض مجالات الحياة، فهناك العديد من عباقرة الفن والادب أمثال بيتهوفن وإسحاق نيوتن وإينشتاين وفان جوخ كانوا مصابين بالذاتوية.
ويعد اللعب من مدخلا ووسيله أساسية لتنمية إبداع الطفل وتنميته من جميع جوانب نموه، حيث يتيح للطفل الفرصة للتعبير عن رأيه ونفسه، كما يساعده في تفريغ طاقاته الجسمية والإنفعالية و التيتساعده بدروه على النمو بشكل سليم.
