Bibliography: pages 71-94.
Background: Mental health of hypertensive patients is usually less estimated and under assessed than physical health. Role of physical activity in improving mental status in patients with chronic illness is emerging. It is thought that adequate level of daily physical activity can improve the mental health status and consequently lead to better control of the disease.
Objectives: To explore the relationship between physical activity and mental health status in hypertensive patients.
Methods: A cross-sectional study in which 260 hypertensive patients were invited to participate in the study and interviewed using structured questionnaires included evaluation of their physical activity levels and screened for their mental health status by depression anxiety stress scale (DASS 21).
Results: Anxiety was the most prevalent disorder among the study participants with (73.8%) percentage, followed by depression (61.5%) and stress (50.4%) with no significant relationship between physical activity status and frequency of these disorders.
Conclusion: Mental disorders were very prevalent among hypertensive patients either controlled or non-controlled. Occurrence of these disorders was not affected by physical activity status of the patients.
