Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) -Cairo University, 2023. Summary: Infection with “Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)” leads to significant pulmonary symptoms that have bad impact on function and life quality (QoL). Breathing exercises are effective and important in patients with “COVID-19”. Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of Buteyko breathing versus Bhastrika Pranayama on different outcome measures in patients with “COVID-19”. Methods: patients (n=60) of both genders with age ranged from 40-50 years were recruited from Central Hospital (between May and July 2022) with confirmed “COVID-19” diagnosis by a physician via lab analysis and imaging. Patients were allocated randomly into two groups A & B and took their medications. Group A underwent conventional program (mobility exercises and Postural drainage) with Bhastrika breathing. Group B underwent conventional program with Buteyko breathing. Patients were assessed by Modified Borg Dyspnea Scale (MBS), blood samples (d-dimer and C-reactive protein levels), six-Minute Walk Test (6MWT), 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36), and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Mixed MANOVA was conducted. Results: The result of study showed a marked reduction in the CRP, D-dimer, and PSQI of group A (Bhastrika) post-treatment compared with pretreatment by the percent of change (37.33%, 20%, 41.6%) respectively and marked raise in the 6MWT and SF-36 (8.88%, 21.90% respectively). While, in Buteyko group there was marked reduction in the CRP, D- dimer, and PSQI after treatment compared with before treatment by the percent of change (40.34%, 22.73%, 39.35%) respectively and marked raise in the 6MWT and SF-36 (5.74%, 18.61%) respectively. Conclusion: Both types of breathing techniques were effective in improving dyspnea, blood biomarkers, aerobic capacity, sleep quality, and life quality, but Bhastrika is better in 6MWT.Summary:
