Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.)-Cairo University, 2023. Summary: To evaluate the role of ultrasound in the assessment of different kinds of tendon abnormalities of the hand and wrist and correlate imaging findings with clinical data and with operative data in operable cases. Background: Tendons of the hand and wrist are the seat of different types of pathologies that might be attributed to degenerative changes, inflammatory, or even rupture. Ultrasound is currently used in identifying any possible cause of tendon abnormalities and to direct the surgical management in operable cases saving both time and effort. Methods: The study included 33 patients; 20 (60.6%) males and 13 (39.4%) females, with a mean age of 32.17±16.35 years. All patients were subjected to thorough history taking and clinical examination. All US examinations were performed while the subjects were in sitting position. Ultra-sonographic examination was performed also to the normal unaffected side. We searched for the continuity of the tendon, possible cause of restricted mobility, pain, swelling as well as presence or absence of adhesions, tears, or associated vascular injury or retained foreign bodies. In the operable cases the surgeon was required to inform the sonographer about the operative findings to be correlated with the US findings. III Results: Ultrasound serves as an excellent diagnostic modality for assessment and management of various tendon abnormalities with providing accurate localization and description of tendon injury patterns and pathologies which can guide surgical or non-surgical management. Conclusion: Ultrasound is sensitive and specific tool in assessing variable tendons pathologies and in aiding their surgical management if required.

Results:
Ultrasound serves as an excellent diagnostic modality for assessment and
management of various tendon abnormalities with providing accurate localization
and description of tendon injury patterns and pathologies which can guide surgical
or non-surgical management.
