This thesis aims to study the language of Egyptian and German university students on Facebook from a sociolinguistics perspective. The transcripts of conversations on Facebook were chosen as the corpus for the study, given its increasing importance nowadays as a widespread means of communication, especially among students. In this context, the social discourse is analyzed in the various conversations on German and Egyptian student Facebook pages, on which various social topics of interest to students are presented and discussed, for example topics of education, work, love, marriage, politics, economics, etc. Based on the diversity of the topics of discussion, the role of Facebook will be highlighted as a contemporary means of linguistic expression for the student community in both Egypt and Germany. In this context, the capabilities provided by written communication on Facebook in the virtual community will be examined in contrast to oral communication in the real community. By analyzing written texts in students’ Facebook conversations derived from the Egyptian Facebook page for Cairo University students and the German Facebook pages for students at Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich, Studienscheiss, and Studentenleben, it is possible to deduce several linguistic elements through which social interaction between students and their interests are expressed. Within the framework of the study, the language used by students to interact on Facebook is also examined, and the dimensions of linguistic interaction between students in Germany and Egypt are explained, in terms of social aspects and linguistic characteristics. In this context, other topics are addressed, such as the topic of alienation, in which Facebook is considered as a means of socially isolating students from their actual communicative reality, and how the student presents himself and his identity on Facebook (online identity) and new models of communication.

تهدف هذه الرسالة إلى دراسة لغة الطلاب الجامعيين المصريين والألمان على الفيسبوك من منظور علم اللغة الاجتماعي. وقد تم اختيار نصوص المحادثات على الفيسبوك متنًا للدراسة، نظرًا لتزايد أهميته في الوقت الحاضر كوسيلة اتصال واسعة النطاق، خاصة بين الطلاب. وفي هذا الإطار يتم تحليل الخطاب الاجتماعي في المحادثات المختلفة على صفحات الفيسبوك الطلابية الألمانية والمصرية، التي يتم عليها طرح ومناقشة الموضوعات الاجتماعية المختلفة التي تهم الطلاب، على سبيل المثال موضوعات التعليم والعمل والحب والزواج والسياسة والاقتصاد وما إلى ذلك. ومن واقع مدى تباين موضوعات النقاش سيتم إبراز دور الفيسبوك كوسيلة معاصرة للتعبير اللغوي عن المجتمع الطلابي في كل من مصر وألمانيا. وفي هذا السياق سيتم الوقوف على الإمكانات التي يوفرها التواصل الخطي على الفيسبوك في المجتمع الافتراضي في مقابل التواصل الشفوي في المجتمع الواقعي. ومن خلال تحليل النصوص المكتوبة في محادثات الطلاب على الفيسبوك المستمدة من صفحة فيسبوك المصرية لطلاب جامعة القاهرة وصفحات فيسبوك الألمانية لطلاب جامعة Ludwig Maximilians في ميونيخ و Studienscheiss و Studentenleben، يمكن استنباط العديد من العناصر اللغوية التي يتم بواسطتها التعبير عن التفاعل الاجتماعي بين الطلاب واهتماماتهم. وفي إطار الدراسة يتم أيضًا الوقوف على اللغة التي يستخدمها الطلاب للتفاعل على الفيسبوك وشرح أبعاد التفاعل اللغوي بين الطلاب في ألمانيا ومصر، من حيث الجوانب الاجتماعية والخصائص اللغوية. وفي هذا السياق يتم تناول مباحث أخرى، مثل مبحث الاغتراب، وفيه يتم الوقوف على الفيسبوك كوسيلة لعزل الطلاب اجتماعيًا عن واقعهم التواصلي الفعلي، وكيفية عرض الطالب لذاته وهويته على الفيسبوك (الهوية الأونلاين) ونماذج التواصل الجديدة.
