Forensic linguistics is a fairly new branch of linguistics that is an integration of language and the law. One of the exciting branches in forensic linguistics is question analysis in courtroom discourse. Verbal sparring, through a series of questions and answers, is part of the courtroom discourse that takes place in trials and has a great appeal. Such an appeal has gathered an audience to watch the lawyers sparring with the suspect or witness with such wit to the point of pushing the suspect into confession. Another reason for its popularity is the televising of some high-profile crimes on air as a result of the horrendous acts committed or the celebrity status of those involved, such as the infamous O.J. Simpson case (1991). Further, the huge popularity of the TV-based legal drama series such as How to Get Away with Murder (2014 – 2020) has managed to attract the audience’s attention.
This study adopted a quantitative/qualitative linguistic analysis design that aimed to linguistically compare and contrast between the different types of questions and their syntactic complexity during the direct and cross-examination stages in real-life and TV-based legal drama series. Results revealed a high use of wh-questions and yes/no questions across the different stages of the trials with different types of witnesses. However, in terms of syntactic complexity the results of the study differed from the published literature. The questions posed to the expert witness during the direct examination stage of the trials be it in real-life or TV-based legal drama trials were more syntactically complex than the questions posed during the cross-examination stages of the trial.

يعد علم اللغة الجنائي أحد الأفرع المستحدثة في علم اللغة ويرتكز هذا الفرع على الدمج بين اللغة والقانون. ومن إحدى فروعه الفرعية المثيرة فرع تحليل الأسئلة في خطاب قاعات المحاكم، وتعد الأسئلة أثناء مرحلتي الاستجواب المباشر والإعادة الدقيقة للاستجواب بين المدعي العام أو محامي الدفاع والشاهد أو المشتبه فيه أمرًا شيقا لأن صيغة السؤال والجواب هي شكل التواصل الحواري الوحيد المسموح به في قاعة المحكمة بين المشاركين فيها والذي من خلاله يحاول المدعي العام/محامي الدفاع بناء أو إثارة الشك في رواية الشاهد أو المشتبه به لكسب القضية، حيث تعد تلك الأسئلة بمثابة مناوشات لفظية بين الطرفين في المحاكمات ذات الصيت الواسع، الأمر الذي جعل لها جمهورا يستمتع بمشاهدة المحامين وهم يتنازعون مع المشتبه به أو الشاهد بدهاء يدفع المشتبه به إلى الاعتراف. بالإضافة إلى أن أحد أسباب رغبة الجماهير في متابعة مناوشات المحامين اللفظية هو تلفزة بعض القضايا التي هزت الرأي العام نتيجة للأعمال المروعة التي ارتكبت أو وضع المشاهير المتورطين بها مثل قضية او.جيه. سيمبسون (1991) وقضية شيبمان (1995)، بالإضافة إلى الشعبية الكبيرة للبرامج التلفزيونية الدرامية القانونية مثل Bull (2016 - 2022) وHow to Get Away with Murder (2014-2020).
تعتمد هذه الدراسة على تصميم التحليل اللغوي الكمي والنوعي والذي يهدف إلى مقارنة تباينية لغوية بين الأنواع المختلفة من الأسئلة وقياس مدى تعقيدها النحوي أثناء مرحلتي الاستجواب المباشر والإعادة الدقيقة للاستجواب في المحاكم الحقيقية ومحاكم المسلسلات المتلفزة.
