Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) -Cairo University, 2024. Summary: Background: Dentistry is a high-risk profession for neck pain due to stressful work positions such as neck flexion, arm abduction, and faulty postural positions, which can cause a forward head posture (FHP). It might affect the hand grip strength (HGS) which is considered the functional unit of the dentists. Objective: To explore whether there is a relationship between FHP and HGS among dentists with and without mechanical neck pain. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on sixty-six right-handed dentists who were allocated into 3 groups as follows Group A had FHP and chronic mechanical neck pain CMNP, Group B had FHP without CMNP, and Group C was healthy matched dentists in age and BMI. Dentists had FHP with a craniovertebral angle (CVA) less than 50° as a reference angle with and without mechanical neck pain compared to healthy matched dentists. All participants were assessed for FHP by photometric measurement of craniovertebral angle (CVA), neck pain by the visual analogue scale (VAS), and neck disability by the neck disability index Arabic version (NDI-AR) and the hand grip strength of both hands by JAMAR plus hand dynamometer. Results: There was a statistically significant difference in the mean values of HGS between the groups (P=0.013), group A had the lowest scores of HGS among the three groups. In group A, there was a weak inverse relationship between neck pain and forward head posture with both right- and left-HGS but it was not statistically significant. In group B, there was a non-significant weak direct correlation between CVA and right- and left-HGS. Conclusion: Forward head posture and neck pain may have a minor association with hand grip strength among dentists.
