Summary: This study intends to evaluate the impact of the securitization of migration on the rise of nationalism in the EU and presents Brexit as a case study. The study also tackles the implications of Brexit on the rise of nationalism in the EU. Migration to the UK was one of the main reasons that pushed the British to vote for leaving the EU. The UK leaving the EU presents future challenges to the EU because other EU member states may leave the EU, and therefore arises the possible trend of the disintegration of the EU as a regional bloc. The EU views migration as an issue of security that threatens the national identity of EU citizens in general, and the UK citizens in particular. Recent observations show that migration has been a huge dilemma for the European Union (EU) since a very long time ago. Since the absence of job opportunities in many countries, both EU members and non-EU members and the economic problems, many people have took the action of migration in search for new job opportunities and in a better standard of living for them and their families. Migration is a great challenge facing the EU. The EU, as a regional institution views migration to it as a huge crisis and a threat to its power. The EU views the issue of migration from a security perspective. Currently, migration is one of the most important issues in the EU policy plan. “All in all, massive and unwanted migrants are deemed to threaten the stability of the union” (Ceccorulli, 2009) Securitizing migration in Europe was one of the reasons that led to Brexit. Historically, President Truman sought Britain, the closest friend to the US, to be the creator and head of “European integration”. “His Secretary of State, Dean Acheson, revealed that he had made it a personal mission to convince Britain to join the European Coal and Steel Community….
