This work has been carried out to investigate the lipid peroxidation and the status of antioxidants in patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) , chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) , acute lymphoid leukemia (ALL) , chronic lymphoid leukemia (CLL) Reduced glutathione (GSH) , lipid peroxidation product such as malondialdhyde (MDA) , glutathione peroxidase (GSH - Px) , glutathione - S - transferase (GST) , catalase (CAT) , total lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and ferritin were determined in 59 patients with lymphoid leukemia (ALL , CLL) and myeloid leukemia (AML , CML) and 15 healthy controls Reduced glutathione concentration was significantly lower in all types of leukemia Moreover , serum CAT and GSH - PX activities were significantly inhibited in myeloid leukemia (AML , CML) and CLL respectively In contrast GST and LDH activities were higher in myeloid leukemia (AML , CML) Serum MDA and ferritin level were significantly elevated in all types of leukemia as compared to control groups There were no differences for parameters cited above between treated and untreated groups of different types of leukemias , suggesting a predominant oxidative stress status which may lead to enhanced action of oxygen radicals , resulting in lipid peroxidation
