Maize yield is severely affected by soil salinity . This study aimed at improving the salt stress tolerance of four Egyptian maize inbred lines (GZ639 , GZ649 , Sd34 and Sd62) and an American line (A188) . A preliminary experiment has been carried out to study the influence of the genetic background of these lines on salt tolerance . Plants were germinated and at the 3rd leaf stage they were subjected to salt stress of 50, 100 and 200 mM NaC1
