Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Medicine - Department of Internal Medicine Summary: Epidemiologoic data shows that as the prevalence of helicobacter pyloir (H. pylori) decreased in western societies the prevalence of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and adenocarcinoma of the esophagus increased . This trend led several investigators to examine the prevalence of H. pylori in patients with GERD. A meta - analysis summarizing the results of 14 case - control studies and 10 clinical trials found that H. pylori negative status was associated with significantly increased risk of GERD . In Egypt the exact prevalence of H. pylori and its relation to GERD has not been well studied before
