It commonly occurs after meningitis and has surgical and functional implications regarding cochlear implantation . In most cases ossification involves only the most basal portion of the cochlea . Complete ossification of the cochlea is unusual . Cochlear obliteration is severe enough to thwart the complete insertion of an electrode array in fewer than 20% of cases
