Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic inflammatory, autoimmune disease that affects mainly young women, who are generally less liable to atheroselerosis. The incidence of myocardial infarction is 5 times as high in patients with lupus as in the general population. The aim of our study is to compare the incidence and extent of coronary artery calcification as measured by multidetector computed tomography in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and controls, and to identify variables associated with coronary calcification in patients with SLE
