The limbus is the anatomical transition of sclera and conjunctival epithelium into cornea and is believed to be the location of the epithelial stem cells of the cornea. These cells, are responsible for maintaining the corneal epithelium throughout life. Under normal physical conditions, the expansion and proliferation of limbal stem cells inhibit the growth of conjunctival epithelial cells and block the invasion of blood vessel capillaries into the stroma
