Hypoxemia is a common complication and signs of chest diseases as a result of pathophysiological changes : (a) Decreased oxygen content (PaO2) of inspired gas , (b) Hypoventilation , (c) Diffusion abnormalities , (d) Abnormal ventilation perfusion ratios , and (e) Pulmonary right to left shunt (McCance and Huether , 2006 ; Hoemann , 2002) Treatment of hypoxemia depends on medical treatment as well as oxygen therapyBut oxygen therapy may lead to oxygen toxicityProne positioning is a technique used to improve oxygenation and relieve hypoxemia ; this could be due to a number of physiological mechanisms egIncrease regional lung inflation as it becomes more homogeneous in the prone position as the pleural pressure gradient decreases in that position
