Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty Of Pharmacy - Department Of Biochemistry Summary: The incidence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus is approximately twice as high as in the non - diabetic populationIGF - I has been shown to enhance insulin sensitivity in patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetesThe purpose of this study is to evaluate the role of IGF - I in the development of cardiovascular complications in type 2 diabetesIn the present study , the groups comprised healthy individuals (n=25) ; type1 diabetic patients (n=21) ; type 2 diabetic patients without CVD (n=20) and type 2 diabetic patients with CVD (n=24) Serum IGF - I and serum IGFBP - 3 levels were detected as well as fasting blood sugar , C - peptide and lipid profileRelation between IGF - I and different studied parameters was performed and possible correlations were assessedOur results showed that the mean serum levels of IGF - I and IGFBP - 3 were significantly decreased in all the studied diabetic groups as compared to controlIn addition , serum IGF - I was significantly decreased in type 2 diabetic patients with CVD as compared to type 2 diabetic patients without CVD and type 1 diabetic patients , suggesting a possible role of IGF - I and its principal binding protein IGFBP - 3 in the progression of the poor outcome of CVD
