It is used as a measure of biological maturity of the children relative to some standard level for normal controls and it illustrates the sequence of changes of the hand bones in general and carpal bones in particular. These changes include the timing and order of appearance of the centers of ossification, morphological changes of the contour of the bones until reaching the full maturity
