PSA is a 28-kilo dalton (KD) protein of the kallikrein family, a group of serine proteases whose genes are found on chromosome 19q13. PSA is abundant in seminal fluid, at concentrations up to 3.0 mg/mL, a million times more abundant than in serum. The enzymatic activity of PSA induces liquefaction of seminal fluid and the release of mobile spermatozoa
