Especially after tooth preparation, that dentinal tubules are patent allowing penetration of bacteria and it's toxin. Also, any external stimulus would cause movement of dentinal fluid which stimulates pain. Desensitizing agents have been used to treat dentin sensitivity, either by interrupting pulpal neural response or by occluding dentinal tubules
