This study examines the modes of expression of anita desai's oppressed characters in three of her novels: Fire on the mountain (1977), clear light of day (1980) and fasting. Feasting (1999). It focuses on the issue of "voice" and its relation to oppression, showing how oppressed characters, whether male or female, fail to "speak" i.e. make their own experience known to others in their own voice
