MRI is the best imaging modality for evaluation of avascular necrosis of the lunate bone ( Kienbock's disease ) by detecting the marrow signal alteration in different pulse sequences helping in differentiation between early and advanced stages of the disease in ulnocarpal abutment syndrome , subtle early changes such as cartilage fibrillation , marrow edema and subcortical cystic changes are visualized by MRI examination
