Two forms of vaccine are currently licensed . The first inactivated virus vaccine was developed in 1952 by Jonas Salk and was prepared by formalin inactivation of three polio virulent strains , Mahoney of Brunenders ( Polio virus type 1 ) , MEF - 1 / Lansing ( Polio virus type 2 ) , and Saukett / Leon ( Polio virus type 3 ) grown in Vero cell line
