This study focuses on the improvement of the operation and understanding of the behavior of submerged fixed-bed biofilm reactors (SFBBRs) as a nitrification process. Two issues were studied in this thesis: the start-up and the starvation of nitrifying biofilms. To achieve the objectives of this thesis, acrated two-stages bench-scale SFBBRs were operated over one year at 20{u00B0}C
