Dissertation note: Thesis (Ph.D.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Nursing - Department of Critical Care and Emergency Nursing Science Summary: Delirium is a severe organic dysfunction of the brain with a decline in attention and cognition it prolongs hospital stay and reintubation period with higher mortality, and cost of care. It represents an interdisciplinary appproach to assessment and mangement. Therefore the aim of this study was to: (a) examine the relationship between ICU delirium and patients' outcomes as indicated by; mechanical ventilation period, cognitive state and ability to perform activity of daily living (ADL), (b) determine the different correlates that might contribute to the occurrence of ICU delirium, and (c) suggest a nursing intervention protocol
