Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the fifth most common cancer in the world . Currently standrad surveillance includes a combination of 6 monthly ultrasound scans (USS) and serum Ü- fetoprotein measurements but this strategy does not reliably detect the disease in its early stages . An increasing body of evidence indicates a key role of the cytokine IL -6 in the process of liver damage and carcinogenesis
