Servere sepsis and septic shock remain a major cause of morbidity and mortality in Paediatric ICU . Whether these patiients would benefit from corticosteroids remains controversial and the presence of adrenocortical insufficiency has been proposed to justify steroid use . In order to study adrenocortical state in infants and children with SIRS and septic shock , cortisol levels were estimated at baseline and after high - dose ACTH stimulation in 30 cases and 30 controls
