Up till now about 400 red cell antigens have been identified among the 30 defined blood groups inherited . The ABO blood group system was first to be identified by Landsteiner in 1900 and Rh blood group system was the fourth one ; both are useful in population genetic studies , in resolving medico legal issues and more importantly in compatibility tests in blood transfusion practice
