The epidermis is a self - renewing stratified squamous epithelium that forms the outermost component of the skin . A balance of proliferation , differentiation and cell death (apoptosis) preserve epidermal homeostasis . A potential modulator of epidermal functions has been identified recently as survivin , a structurally unique member of the inhibitors of apoptosis (IAP) gene family that act at the intersection between proliferation and cell survival
