Dissertation note: Thesis (Ph.D.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Medicine - Department of Parasitology Summary: Despite years of study , the pathogenic role of Blastocystis is still controversial . Phylogenetic and genotypic analysis have shown that Blastocystis exhibits extreme genetic diversity and humans are hosts to a number of zoonotic isolates . The present study was carried on 160 individuals with and without gastrointestinal symtoms . Blastocystis was found in stool samples of 30 (60%) symptomatic and 20 (40%) asymptomatic subjects after different parasitological methods
