The osteogenic capacity of the MSC has been studied in vitro . Early work demonstrated that MSCs cultured on tissue culture in the presence of Dulbecco modified Eagle's media (DMEM) supplemented with 10% fetal bovine serum (FBS) and 50 og/mI of L-ascorbic acid 2- phosphate display changes in gene expression consistent with osteogenesis and mineralization of extracellular matrix
