Objective : Screening a group of adolescent (10-19 years) Egyptian with microcytic hypochromic anemia for beta - thalassemia trait . Conclusion : Screening for beta - thalassemia trait among the study group revealed the presence of 10 carriers (5%). A blood picture presenting with low mean corpuscular volume (MCV) of < 78fL and low mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH) of <27pg provides a useful screening tool for beta - thalassemia trait
