Dissertation note: Thesis (Ph.D.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Science - Department of Biochemistry Summary: Mutations at the mitochondrial genome (mt - DNA) are associated with different types of cancer, specifically colorectal cancer (CRC). However, few studies have been performed on non-cancerous lesions, such as ulcerative colitis (UC) lesions. Adenomatous polyps (AP) and non specific ulcers (NSU). The D - loop region of mt - DNA contains essential transcription and replication elements, and mutations in this region may serve as a potential sensor for cellular DNA damage and a marker for cancer development
