Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Medicine - Department of Neuropsychiatry Summary: Anatomopathological and clinical evidence that has accumulated over the years has led to re-evaluation of the traditional concepts of the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. Rather than a progressive stenosis to a chronically flow-limiting lesion, it is now recognized that thrombotic complications result from physical disruption of the atherosclerotic plaque. The major mechanisms that cause such disruption include rupture of the plaque's fibrous cap and superficial erosion of the endothelial monolayer
