Dissertation note: Thesis (Ph.D.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Science - Department of Botany Microbiology Summary: Paper deteriorating fungi were isolated from 15 Arabic and foreign archive books in the historical library in Cairo University, Egypt. Different isolation techniques were used such as cotton swap, 25 points inoculum, small fragment collection and washings. Fifty one fungal isolates constituting 14 species were screened from Arabic books and 37 isolates constituting 12 species from foreign books. Aspergillii and penicillia represented the highest deteriorating fungal species with 15 of 18 isolated species. Molecular identification of the most frequent paper deteriorating species using 18S ribosomal RNA, DNA amplification by PCR, sequence and alignment analysis indicated that they are aspergillus parvisclerotigenus strain AFc35, A. niger isolate 30, penicillium crustosum strain DAOM 215345, cladosporium cladosporioides strain LA8, A. flavus isolate ucb042, P. digitatum strain DAOM 226630, P. commune strain GC-1, P. italicum strain CECT 2294, aspergillus oryzae strain CJ - A3 and A. tubingensis isolate Uf125 - 1
