Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Medicine - Department of Pathology
Papillary thyroid carcinoma is the most common type of well differentiated thyroid carcinoma and it accounts for at least 70% of all follicular - cell derived thyroid malignancies. Conflicting data exist about the prevalence of HER- 2 / neu overexpression in papillary thyroid carcinoma ranging from 6.9 to 70 %. In the current study we tried to clarify the extent of expression and its relationship to clinicopathological parameters. This study involved 50 cases of papillary thyroid carcinoma diagnosed in thyroidectomy specimens. HER- 2 / neu immunohistochemistry was performed using the C- erbB- 2 gene product. Out of 50 specimens, 28 were HER- 2 / neu positive (56%) and 22 (44%) were HER- 2 / neu negative. No significant relationship was found between membranous HER- 2 expression and any of the clinicopathological parameters
