Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Engineering - Department of Electrical Power and Machines Summary: Distance relays are used as the main protection for extra high voltage electric power transmission lines rather than other types of protections due to the advantage of being independent of the short circuit level and also the provision of main and back up protections in one device. This thesis introduces two proposed schemes to overcome the major distance relay problems and speed up its operation at the instantaneous zone. The major relay problems include the problems associated with DC decaying component of current signal, the problems associated with the shunt capacitance of transmission line, and the problem of detecting faults and out - of - step condition during power swing
