Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Science - Department of Biophysics Summary: The characterization of normal, malignant and benign excised breast tissue samples is currently dependent on the decision made by a histopathologist. Any mistake in this diagnosis may result in fatal consequences. Therefore, there is an increasing need for a confirmatory test that would support the histopathological investigation results. The present study investigates the possibility of using FTIR technique as a confirmatory tool for histopathological analysis of excised breast tissues. For such purpose, 20 normal, 28 malignant and 21 benign excised breast tissue samples are collected. The scatter diagrams of suggested FTIR characterization parameters are plotted and the corresponding diagnostic indices (sensitivity, specificity, diagnostic accuracy and positive and negative predictive value) are calculated showing maximum values reaching 100% for differentiating between normal and diseased samples
