Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Economics and Political Science - Department of Political Science Summary: Europe{u2019}s energy mix is strongly dominated by fossil fuels. The underlying reason for the large and growing dependence on foreign supplies is Europe{u2019}s limited indigenous energy production capacity. The EU{u2019}s dependence on foreign supplies is projected to grow from about 50% in 2005 to approximately 70% in 2030, thus the EU energy security is fundamentally linked to the security of supply from the global fossil fuel markets, especially after the 2006-2009 gas crisis when Russia cut off the gas flow to EU via Ukraine. A discussion on energy security requires a common understanding of the concept. The existence of different interpretations and approaches makes its definition difficult and somehow elusive. This study has concluded the importance of the EU{u2019}s diversification of its energy sources whether from the supplier countries or the type of energy
