Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Science - Department of Analytical Chemistry Summary: The present work investigated the characteristics of natural organic matters (NOM) in the raw drinking water from the river Nile and their relation to the formation of disinfection by-products (DBPs) during the treatment processes. Water samples were collected from four drinking water treatment plants (DWTP) and their distribution system in greater Cairo. The factors affecting the formation of trihalomethanes (THMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs) during the treatment processes were studied. Those factors are Cl2 dosage, total organic carbon (TOC), pH, temperature of the water body and the contact time with Cl2. The results indicated that the maximum formation of DBPs was observed at pH 7.5. As the level of Cl2 - dosage, contact time, temperature of water body and TOC content increase the formation of THMs and HAAs will increase. Fractionation of the dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in water was performed as hydrophilic fractions (HPI), hydrophobic fractions (HPO) and transphilic fractions TPI
