Dissertation note: Thesis (Ph.D.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Science - Department of Botany Taxonomy and Flora Summary: With genera and species, the Leguminosae is the third largest family in the flora of Egypt (Boulos 1999, 2009); The genera and species of Leguminosae are distributed among the three subfamilies as follows: the Mimosoideae with genera and species, the Caesalpinioideae with genera and species, and the Papilionoideae 38 genera and 208 species. It comprises 476 genera and 13855 species (APG 2011), distributed mainly in the temperate and subtropical parts of the world. Many of the species are of immense economic value globally as legume crops, including the innumerable cultivars of beans, faba beans, vetches (Vicia spp., Phaseolus spp., Vigna spp.), soybean (Glycine max), peas (Pisum sativum), chickpea (Cicer arietinum), Lucerne or alfalfa (Medicago sativa), lentils (Lens esculentus), clovers (Trifolium spp.) and lupins (Lupinus spp.). Despite the huge range of variation in morphological features of their vegetative parts, members of the Papilionoideae are easily distinguishable from the rest of Leguminosae by the papilionoid structure of the corolla (Watson and Dallwitz 1992 onwards, APG 2011)
